While the right to know (free access to information) is not enshrined in the Trinidad and Tobago Constitution, it is a citizen’s basic right and is essential for good management of the government and the economy.Trinidad and Tobago can boast to being one of the first countries in the region to introduce a Freedom of Information Act. This act, passed in Parliament in 1999, came into effect in 2001. It aims to allow the public right to freedom of access to information.
