dc.description.abstract This study begins with an overview of crime and democratization in Central America. Next, it reviews the literature to identify the main theories that explain how crime could affect support for the rule of law. To test these theories, the author turns to the 2006 Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) data, which queries respondents on their experiences and perceptions of crime, as well as their support for the rule of law. Finally, the conclusion discusses the implications of the empirical findings for democratic governance.
